How to Practice Self-Reflection This Year

Events that cause a nation to stop in its tracks are rare.  We refer to them as “watershed moments.”  Decades later, you’ll still recall the event as if it happened yesterday.  We are going through a watershed moment.  A tipping point, forcing Americans to look in the mirror.  While confronting the ugliness embedded in our lives and culture is not a positive experience, it is an opportunity for profound change—if we take it. The recent events have challenged me to look for blind spots in my life where bias, prejudice, and privilege have crept in.  We all have blind spots, but awareness leads to change. The practice of Self-reflection is a helpful for revealing our blind spots.  We should live to promote equality, justice, and …

How to Release Anger Without Hurting Others

Motivation is life changing.  Your life is changing every day. What happens today, you wouldn’t have imagined a few months ago. What would tomorrow bring? You might only find out tomorrow. Change is either changing for the better or it is slowly changing for the worse.  “Change happens in an instant.  It happens the moment you decide to change.” Motivation is derived from the verb “motivate,” which means “move.” It is the burning desire that compels you to take action. It is so deeply intertwined with what you believe to be true and right in life that it moves you from a simple desire to a moment of decision. Have you ever watched a working dog? The only motivation is …

Knowledge Or Action?

It’s been said that knowledge is power. While that’s true to an extent, it isn’t the whole truth. Knowledge without action is almost useless. It doesn’t help to be a genius if you never do anything with the knowledge. I tend to think of knowledge as ammunition and action as a gun. (It’s a typical guy thought, I know but it works for me.) Think about it. If you have bullets and no gun, they’re pretty much useless. If you have a gun and no bullets, the best you can do is throw (action) the gun at the target. Not as useless as the bullets (knowledge) since action without knowledge is more productive than knowledge without action The reason I’ve …

Following Your Passion

I’d like to write a few lines here to tell about a quite valuable concept that I read about while browsing a very educational website. The concept I’m referring to is that of following your passion. Let me start by saying that a person’s passion will arouse and inspire him/her to put effective effort into action. And the enthusiasm from this inspiration is in fact contagious. It will vitally affect all with whom this persons comes into contact. Your passion for something affects you in the same way steam can forcefully move a locomotive. This is why the most successful leaders will make it a point to inspire moments of passion and enthusiasm in their followers. When a person makes …

Discover Your Path to Success – Part 4

In Part Three, I promised we would get into the resources. Before we do, however, let’s discuss a treasure that most of us have been exposed to, but don’t take nearly enough time out of our day to focus on – the power of prayer. This may offend some people, but I hope it does not; as that is not my intent. As humans, we have progressed in so many ways, but we have lost touch with our bodies, nature, and the power of prayer. There seems to be a spiritual renaissance, of sorts, going on in the “new age” movement. However, there are a large number of children growing up with no spiritual guidance at all. There are many …

Discover Your Path to Success – Part 2

Time taken for self-analysis is so important in developing your road map to success. Let’s continue with a few more questions to ask yourself – before we go into the heart of the formula for personal success. Are you easily distracted? Most people cannot focus on a goal, without getting “side tracked.” When this cannot be helped, you can develop a new skill set, through meditation, self-hypnosis, or by learning not to give up. You can learn to meditate in a variety of ways. At my site, we have a course, but you can also find Yoga classes where meditation is taught. There are many good books and CD’s. A very good CD is Meditation Made Simple by John Daniels. …

All Faith Needs Feet

A subscriber recently wrote to me: A friend of mine is on a fixed income and has maxed out his credit cards (nearing $10,000). He has started a new business, but currently has no customers or prospects. He is affirming that he is already successful and debt-free. What is the best way for him? Should he write checks to pay his bills as they arrive, even though the money may not be in his account at the moment? Wouldn’t these concrete actions demonstrate his faith? My Answer: Faith is a wonderful thing – and very necessary. There are, however, approaches that may look like faith but lead us in risky directions. Please tell your friend that he needs to pay …

Allow Time For Germination

There is a concept in coaching called seed planting. It means that it takes time for new ideas and suggestions to be embraced. There are clients that take hold of a new idea and run with it, some take a little more time to allow the idea to grow while others can take years before the idea sprouts. Still some clients will never grasp the idea. It will simply lay dormant. It doesn’t really matter what the client does with the idea. The purpose is to plant the seed and the client can do with it what they will. Sometimes the idea just needs time to germinate. A counselor once told me that not to make a decision is a …

Action Speaks Louder

We’ve all been in that place. You have a pretty good idea what must be done, but you can’t do it. You know it is the appropriate thing to do, but you just can’t act. You are stuck. You mull the circumstances over and over in your head, but still you don’t really do anything about it. You wait…wait for life to come along and work it out for you. Then you accept the outcome. There are times when this approach might be okay, perhaps even the best choice; but most of the time we just don’t have the courage to make a decision. That’s what it boils down to, you know…courage. Well, I know that’s the case for me …
